The state Commissioner of environment, Hon Sidney Tambari has called for a collective efforts to restore the lands and environment from degradation.
Hon Tambari made the call at this year’s word environment day celebration in port Harcourt.
Hon. Tambari said that the world environment Day is a global event marked annually to raise awareness inorder to propel action geared towards lands restoration.
The state Commissioner however called for collaborative action to restore the lands, regretting that the lands have been turned to deserts, even as he lamented over soil depreciation, adding that something urgently need to be done.
He expressed gratitude to all those who made this year’s word environment Day celebration a huge success, especially the Directors and staff of the state ministry of environment.
Earlier, Chairman of the occasion and former Commissioner, state ministry of environment, Hon. Prof. Roseline Konya said that the theme of this year’s word Environment Day celebration is ,” Land Protection, Desertification, Drought Resilience” .
According to Prof Konya, World Environment Day is celebrated all over the world, pointing out that the event was first celebrated in the united states of America in 1972.
Prof Konya noted that the Lands has been de- organized, while stressing the need to protect the lands and environment.
She said that all hands must be on deck to ensure that the Lands is restored.
In his good will message, the Niger Delta activist, Anabs Sara Igbe said harped on preservation and restoration of the lands and environment, pointing out that the steps of restoring the lands and environment must start from the ministry of environment.
According to Anabs, the environment has been highly destroyed through pollution, especially in the Niger Delta region. The daily oil exploration and pollution has negativity affected the environment.
Anabs Sara Igbe maintained that the Rivers have been destroyed and the Riverines who are predominantly fishermen and women can no longer get anything from the River, because the whole water has been polluted.
The Niger Delta activist said that, except the people of the region take drastic measures, beginning with the state ministry of environment to champion the cause of environmental pollution and land degradation, then issue of environmental pollution would continue to occur.
